- The political scientist assessed Estonia's termination of negotiations with the Russian Federation on Narva

The European Union needed Estonia only as a bridge between Russia and Europe. Maxim Reva, a political scientist, told Izvestia on May 30.
On this day, the press service of the Estonian Foreign Ministry reported that the country's authorities had not installed navigation buoys on the Narva River this year due to the termination of negotiations with Russia on this issue.
According to him, the rupture of relations between Estonia and the Russian Federation occurred much earlier and the normal negotiation process on Narva has not been going on for a long time. He called Tallinn's latest decision another point that confirms that a break in relations has occurred.
"Estonia has lowered the iron curtain by itself, without even realizing that no one needs it on the other side. Estonia has always been interesting to Europe only when it was a transit and financial bridge between Russia and Europe. Nobody needs Estonia now," Reva said.
He also stressed that any agreement is important because it regulates certain issues.
"In this case, Estonia is making things worse for itself. Not us (Russia. — Ed.) we need Estonia now, and Estonia needs us. The treaty was important for Estonia, and for Russia it was important precisely in the context of the Leningrad Region and the Kingisepp district. It was important for the north-west of the country. The fewer contracts there are, the more likely the rights of the strong are. And we understand perfectly well who the force is with," the expert said.
On May 26, Nikolai Patrushev, Assistant to the President of the Russian Federation, Chairman of the Russian Maritime Board, said that the West was adjusting the regulatory framework in order to inspect ships carrying cargo in international waters in the interests of Russia. In addition, the chairman of the Russian Maritime Board told how the Estonian authorities, under the pretext of preventing threats to critical underwater infrastructure, are attempting to detain ships bound for Russia.
On May 20, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova called on the international community to respond to NATO's provocations in the Baltic. According to her, the NATO countries in the Baltic Sea are acting against the principles of freedom of maritime navigation.
In March, the Estonian Parliament (Riigikogu) did not support the bill on closing the border with Russia. 14 deputies voted in favor of closing the border with the Russian Federation, while 61 people voted against.
