On May 29, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressed hope for reaching a compromise during a new round of negotiations, which was previously announced by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

"This statement by Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov should not be taken lightly. This statement further strengthened our hope for peace," Erdogan said during a conversation with reporters after returning from Azerbaijan.

The Turkish leader stressed that Ankara continues to strive for peace and will continue its efforts to achieve it.

"We are using all our diplomatic power and potential for peace," the communications department of the President of the Republic of Turkey quoted Erdogan as saying on the social network X (former. Twitter).

Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov announced on May 28 that the second round of talks between Russia and Ukraine would be held in Istanbul on June 2. He expressed the hope that all parties interested in the success of the peace process would provide support for a new round of discussions.

On the same day, the head of the Russian delegation, Adviser to the President of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Medinsky, invited the Ukrainian Minister of Defense and the head of the Ukrainian delegation to negotiations with Russia, Rustem Umerov, to meet to exchange memoranda with a position on a cease-fire and conflict resolution. According to Medinsky, Russia is ready for a "meaningful" discussion of an agreement to end the Ukrainian conflict. Umerov said that Ukraine had submitted its draft memorandum to Russia and was waiting for the Russian version of the document.
