The auto expert listed the aging factors of engine oil

Engine oil loses its properties over time. This is influenced by many factors, the knowledge of which can prolong the stable operation of the engine and avoid expensive repairs. This was stated by Pavel Bakharev, technical expert at Sintec Lubricants.

"One of the key enemies of oil is high temperatures. If the cooling system malfunctions or the engine overheats, the oil oxidizes faster, thickeners are destroyed, viscosity decreases and the ability to protect engine parts decreases. This is especially critical for turbocharged engines, where the thermal loads on engine oil are higher," the Rossiyskaya Gazeta newspaper quoted Bakharev as saying on May 27.

Another problem is contamination by combustion products, soot particles, metal shavings, dust and remnants of unburned fuel accumulate in the oil. And during short trips, the engine does not have time to warm up, which causes moisture to condense in the oil and oxides to accumulate, destroying the additives. Frequent start-stop driving in traffic jams has a similar effect, the expert explained.

In addition, the oil loses its properties faster due to low-quality fuel, which does not burn completely and leaves tarry deposits, increasing the sulfur content, which provokes corrosion. During vehicle downtime, the oil ages due to oxidation and evaporation of light fractions. Finally, the oil ages faster due to high engine loads, the specialist added.
