Dmitry Kulikov, Associate Professor, Director of the Institute of Applied Biotechnology and Food Engineering named after Academician I.A. Rogov of the Russian Academy of Sciences at Rosbiotech University, spoke on Friday, May 23, about the signs of ripe cherries.

"When choosing cherries, pay attention to the coloring: in ripe berries, it is uniform, without mechanical damage and signs of rotting. The indicator of freshness is the peduncle. In newly harvested berries, it retains its green color and elastic structure," Kulikov said in an interview with Lenta.Ru .

He noted that the presence of excessive glossiness of berries may indicate unfair processing.

In Russia, sweet cherries from the Krasnodar Territory and Crimea are considered the most environmentally friendly. 360.ru .

Kulikov added that, according to the recommendations of Rospotrebnadzor, the optimal portion of sweet cherries for an adult is 300-400 g at a time.

"This amount provides the body with the necessary micronutrients, without creating an excessive load on the pancreas due to the high fructose content. For people with impaired carbohydrate metabolism or gastrointestinal diseases, this norm should be reduced by eating berries after the main meal," the expert said.

He noted that cherries contain a unique complex of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals, including anthocyanins, vitamin C, potassium and magnesium.

Earlier, on May 20, nutritionist Elena Solomatina told Izvestia that glossy, odorless strawberries were most likely chemically treated, so they should arouse the buyer's alertness.

According to her, the glossy appearance of the berry may indicate that it was processed to be brought in marketable form from far away, for example from abroad. The expert added that Russia has certain sanitary standards and requirements for such goods, but food products from abroad are more difficult to control before they are brought into the country.

In addition, Solomatina advised not to eat more than 200 grams of blueberries per day, RT reports. She noted that the berry contains organic acids and its use by people suffering from diseases of the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) can be harmful.
