Russia will not accept the idea of a truce in Ukraine until negotiations and a full settlement of the conflict. This was stated on May 21 by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov during a speech at the Russian-Armenian University.

"Now that we're being told: "Let's have a truce, and then we'll see," no, guys. We've been in these stories before, we don't want to do this anymore," he stressed.

In particular, Lavrov recalled that Western countries deceived Russia in 2014 when they staged a coup in Kiev immediately after the Ukrainian authorities and the opposition agreed on a settlement. He added that the Minsk agreements concluded later were aimed not at resolving the conflict, but at the opportunity to rearm the Ukrainian army.

Earlier in the day, Lavrov said that calls for an unconditional ceasefire in Ukraine coming from Europe were aimed at rearming Kiev. According to him, for several years, European leaders have had a different position when the European Union (EU) and NATO rejected any negotiations with Russia.
