French President Emmanuel Macron worried that if opposition candidate George Simion wins the presidential election, Romania could block aid to Ukraine and Moldova, as well as allegedly hinder efforts to rearm Europe. This was announced on May 21 by Romanian President-elect Nicusor Dan. His words are quoted by Politico.

"Macron was extremely friendly with me, and also concerned, because this is not only a Romanian issue," Dan said.

According to Politico, during a telephone conversation with Dan, Macron expressed concern that Simion could block support and assistance to Moldova and Ukraine, as well as delay the process of rearmament of the European Union (EU).

"I want to maintain partnership with the United States, but supporting European efforts to strengthen European security <...> and, of course, increase defense spending," the politician stressed.

On May 18, the Central Election Commission of Romania announced the victory of the mayor of Bucharest and the candidate of the country's ruling party, Dan, in the second round of the presidential election. It was reported that, according to calculations, the current president had more than 54% of the vote. On the same day, he addressed the voters and declared that his victory belongs to his fellow citizens.

After that, on May 21, Dan stated that sending Romanian troops as part of the peacekeeping forces to Ukraine was inappropriate. According to the president-elect, this step may worsen the already existing tension in relations between Romania and Russia.
