Moldovan President Maia Sandu and other representatives of Chisinau directly interfered in the Romanian presidential election in order to keep "loyal friends." This was announced to Izvestia on May 20 by the former president of Moldova, the head of the opposition Party of Socialists, Igor Dodon.

"For Maya Sanda, for the current Moldovan authorities, these elections were very important. We know that in the presidential elections [in Moldova] last year and in the parliamentary elections this year, our diaspora, our citizens who live in Romania, voted quite actively. Last year, tens of thousands of Moldovans voted for Maia Sandu in Romania. Therefore, for the current Moldovan regime, which is criminal, in our opinion, it was important to keep loyal friends in power in Romania. Of course, this result is beneficial to her," Dodon said.

He noted that all the top officials of Moldova — the president, the prime minister, the speaker of parliament - interfered in the elections directly, openly campaigning for one candidate and at the same time criticized another, which, Dodon stressed, was unacceptable.

Commenting on the results of the second round of the Romanian presidential election, Dodon noted that the last campaign demonstrated a deep split in the neighboring country. At the same time, the results of the vote, according to him, showed an increase in protest sentiments and an increase in the number of people supporting politicians defending national interests.

"The results of the elections in Romania have clearly shown that the new trend of politicians and political parties who are determined to strengthen their sovereign position and defend national interests is gaining more and more support. I think they won these elections," Dodon said.

At the same time, Dodon urged not to put an end to this issue, as Romania has very serious economic problems. According to him, it will be very difficult for Bucharest to form a government, adopt a budget, and stop price increases in the near future. He also suggested that early parliamentary elections could be held there in the near future.

A day earlier, Dodon said that in the elections in Romania, where the pro-European candidate Nikushor Dan won, there was interference from foreign countries, as well as globalists and "marxists." Ilan Shor, the leader of the Moldovan opposition bloc Pobeda, also commented on the presidential elections, calling them an imitation with a previously known outcome for the West.

On the same day, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stressed that the Romanian presidential election was strange. He said that the winner of the Romanian elections won due to the lack of a "favorite candidate."

On May 18, Romania held the second round of repeated presidential elections. It was reported that Romanian police removed the head of the opposition Alliance for the Unification of Romanians party, George Simion, and the favorite of the presidential elections canceled in 2024, Calin Georgescu, from a polling station in a Bucharest suburb. Nicusor Dan, the mayor of Bucharest and candidate of the ruling Romanian party, won the election.
