Turkish police have detained 22 more suspects as part of a criminal investigation into corruption at Istanbul City Hall. There are high-ranking officials among them. This was reported on May 20 by the TRT Haber television and radio company.

"As part of the investigation, an investigation was conducted into the actions of [the Turkish Consul General in Tabriz, Iran] Taner Cetin, who kept in touch with [the detained mayor of Istanbul] Ekrem Imamoglu since his tenure as mayor of Beylikduzu," the publication says.

It is reported that the investigation continues under such articles as "leadership of a criminal organization", "membership in a criminal organization", "extortion", "bribery", "aggravated fraud" and "falsification of the tender".

Cetin organized tenders for companies close to him and received financial benefits through "bribes" from firms that won tenders, the article says.

"During the investigation, a warrant was issued for the detention of 22 suspects, including [company] IMM personnel," TRT Haber added.

On March 19, Turkish law enforcement authorities issued a warrant for Imamoglu's detention. An anti-corruption operation has been launched against the Istanbul administration. The mayor of the city was arrested on March 23. After that, the Interior Ministry announced that Imamoglu had been temporarily suspended from his duties.

Against the background of his arrest, mass protests began in the republic.
