There are prospects for moving in the right direction in relations between the Russian Federation and the United States, but it is too early to talk about a full restoration of cooperation. There is still a fairly large field of disagreement between Moscow and Washington, including fundamental ones, Konstantin Kosachev, Deputy Chairman of the Federation Council, told Izvestia.

"However, there is a mutual desire to move forward despite our differences, focusing on what does not divide us. This is the fundamental difference between the position of [US President Donald] Trump from his predecessor [Joe] Biden and the current leaders of Europe. They all concentrated and continue to concentrate on disagreements. Trump is ready to pay more attention to what unites us now, or could theoretically unite us in the future," Kosachev said.

If the United States wants to restore inter-parliamentary dialogue, this initiative will be heard and picked up in Russia if it is not accompanied by some preliminary, especially unacceptable conditions, the deputy chairman of the Federation Council told Izvestia.

"The initiative to freeze inter-parliamentary contacts came from the American side, which means that the American side should take the initiative to restore them. We are ready for this, we have never considered it right to extend interstate disagreements to parliamentary dialogue," the politician said.

On May 19, the Presidents of the Russian Federation and the United States held a telephone conversation. Russian President Vladimir Putin called the conversation with Trump informative, frank and very useful and expressed gratitude to the American leader for the U.S. participation in the resumption of direct talks between Russia and Ukraine.
