Nicusor Dan, the mayor of Bucharest and candidate of the country's ruling party, who won the re-run presidential elections in Romania, will pursue an anti-Russian policy. Vadim Trukhachev, a political scientist and associate professor of the Department of Foreign Regional Studies and Foreign Policy at the Russian State University of Economics, shared this opinion with Izvestia on May 19.

"This will emphasize the anti—Russian policy in the Polish and Baltic spirit," the expert admitted.

According to him, we should expect extremely anti-Russian rhetoric and a "servile" policy towards the European Union (EU) and NATO. According to the political scientist, Dan will increase the supply of weapons to Ukraine and the number of foreign military personnel in Romania.

"He will turn a blind eye to the oppression of ethnic Romanians in Ukraine, and will help [Moldovan President Maya] Sandu as much as possible in the fight against Gagauzia and Transnistria. But the only point is that Dan opposes the annexation of Moldova. Therefore, he will help Sandu, but up to the line related to the annexation of Moldova," Trukhachev said.

The political scientist explained the situation with the repeat elections in Romania, the second round of which was accompanied by reports of violations, by the "logic of wartime" in the EU.

"This is the logic of wartime. The European Union <...> cannot allow an opponent of its weapons to come to power in a country bordering Ukraine. Here, apparently, the violations were simply gross," concluded Trukhachev.

On May 18, Romania held the second round of repeated presidential elections. It was reported that Romanian police removed the head of the opposition Alliance for the Unification of Romanians party, George Simion, and the favorite of the presidential elections canceled in 2024, Calin Georgescu, from a polling station in a Bucharest suburb.

Also on May 18, Pavel Durov, the founder of the Telegram messenger, announced that one of the Western European countries had asked the messenger to block the channels of Romanian conservatives against the background of the presidential elections in the country. Durov refused. He later added that the French special services had made such a request.
