French President Emmanuel Macron wrote a post on May 18 reproaching manipulation in the Romanian elections after accusing Telegram founder Pavel Durov of France of interfering in the electoral process.

Earlier, Durov reported on the social network X that the head of French intelligence had asked him to limit the activity of conservative voices in Romania before the upcoming elections.

Macron, in turn, accused the unnamed party of "attempts at manipulation."

"Despite numerous attempts at manipulation, Romanians have chosen democracy tonight," he wrote on Twitter.

On his Facebook page, the French President congratulated Bucharest Mayor Nicusor Dan on his election as President of Romania.

According to the CEC count, after counting 100% of the votes, Dan won the election (55.16%).

On May 18, the founder of Telegram announced that one of the Western European countries had asked the messenger to block the channels of Romanian conservatives against the background of the presidential elections taking place in the country. Durov refused. He later added that such a request had been made from France.

On the morning of May 18, the second round of the presidential election began in Romania. Polling stations opened at 7:00 (coincides with Moscow time) and worked until 21:00. There were 18,979 polling stations in the country. Romanian citizens living outside the country vote for three days.

It was reported that Romanian police removed the head of the opposition Alliance for the Unification of Romanians party, George Simion, and the favorite of the presidential elections canceled in 2024, Calin Georgescu, from a polling station in a Bucharest suburb. The politicians wanted to make statements, but the police escorted them outside. Simion and Georgescu came to the polling stations accompanied by dozens of supporters.
