Bucharest Mayor Dan wins Romanian presidential election


Nicusor Dan, Mayor of Bucharest and candidate of the ruling Romanian party, wins the second round of the presidential election after counting 99% of the ballots. This follows on Sunday, May 18, from the data of the Central Election Commission of the country.
According to calculations, Dan now has more than 54% of the votes. He addressed the voters, saying that his victory belongs to his fellow citizens.
"This is a victory for thousands and thousands of people who supported the campaign these days and believed that Romania could change in the right direction," Dan said at a press conference.
The head of the opposition Alliance for the Unification of Romanians (AUR) party, George Simion, admitted defeat and congratulated his opponent on his victory.
"We will continue our struggle for freedom and our great values together with other patriots, sovereignists and conservatives around the world. We may have lost the battle, but we definitely won't lose the war," Simion wrote on his Facebook page. Twitter).
On the morning of May 18, the second round of the presidential election began in Romania. Polling stations opened at 7:00 (coincides with Moscow time) and worked until 21:00. There were 18,979 polling stations in the country. Romanian citizens living outside the country vote for three days.
It was reported that Romanian police removed the head of the opposition Alliance for the Unification of Romanians party, George Simion, and the favorite of the presidential elections canceled in 2024, Calin Georgescu, from a polling station in a Bucharest suburb.
