- Politico reported on the preparations for a coup in Romania after the cancellation of Georgescu's victory.

An armed coup involving mercenaries was planned in Romania by an ally of presidential candidate Calin Georgescu. This was reported by Politico on Saturday, May 17.
According to the investigation, Georgescu wanted to stage mass riots that would resemble an attempt to storm the Capitol on January 6, 2021, after the defeat of US presidential candidate Donald Trump at that time.
Investigators are now considering Georgescu's meeting with his allies after the defeat as a key moment in a "conspiracy" to destabilize the situation in Romania through an uprising after the cancellation of the elections, the author of the publication believes.
Horatio Potra, whom Politico calls a "mercenary leader," was also present at the meeting with Georgescu.
Earlier, on May 12, the leader of the opposition Alliance for the Unification of Romanians party, George Simion, who entered the first round of the Romanian presidential election, said he was seeking an alliance with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban. The politician called himself a Eurorealist and stressed that he was not a Eurosceptic. His leadership in the first round of the presidential election became known on May 4, after he won 42.28% of the vote. The second round of elections is scheduled for May 18.
Presidential elections were held in Romania in November 2024. In terms of the number of votes, Georgescu was in the lead with 22.94% of the votes. The second round was scheduled to take place on December 8. At the same time, on December 6, the Constitutional Court of Romania annulled the voting results.
