The US administration is confident that Russia's strategy of attrition has failed, and President Donald Trump is seeking to promote peace in Ukraine. This was announced on Friday, May 16, by the deputy special envoy of the American leader, Morgan Ortagus.

"The previous administration tried to play the game of waging a war of attrition with the Russians. No one in history has ever won this [before]. [The] "as much as you need" formula has never been a winning strategy," she said on Fox News.

According to her, the Ukrainian conflict is a "challenge" that Trump and his team are currently working on.

On the same day, he had a telephone conversation with US President Donald Trump after talks between the Ukrainian and Russian delegations in Istanbul. It was attended by the Presidents of Ukraine and France, Vladimir Zelensky, Emmanuel Macron, the Prime Ministers of Poland and the United Kingdom, Donald Tusk and Keir Starmer, as well as German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.

The delegations of Russia and Ukraine at the talks on May 16 agreed to present their vision of a cease-fire and to exchange prisoners of war in the format of 1000 for 1000.
