The United States will begin negotiations with NATO countries on reducing the American military presence in Europe in 2025. This was announced by Matthew Whitaker, Permanent Representative of the United States to the alliance, during a press conference in Estonia on May 16.

"This will definitely happen after the [NATO] summit in The Hague, and later this year we will begin these negotiations. <...> Our allies are ready to do this," he was quoted as saying by the Reuters news agency.

He noted that there are no specific agreements yet, but as soon as they are reached, negotiations on changes in the structure of NATO will begin. The US representative also added that the United States would remain a "great ally" and ruled out the country's withdrawal from the bloc.

Earlier, on April 23, the Politico newspaper reported that European countries would face problems if the United States abandoned its obligations to ensure security in this part of the world. According to the newspaper, the Europeans do not have enough planes, cargo ships and specialized vehicles to move tanks and armored units.

Pentagon Chief Pete Hegseth said on April 9 that the American side had not yet developed a plan for a further US military presence in Europe. He noted that the final decision rests with President Donald Trump.
