Many car owners underestimate the role of brake fluid and forget about the need for regular replacement, which can lead to serious consequences on the road, said Pavel Bakharev, technical expert at Sintec Lubricants. According to him, in some cases it is necessary to change the liquid more often than the manufacturer recommends.

"Automakers recommend replacing the brake fluid once every two years or every 30-40 thousand kilometers, whichever comes first. However, if the car is operated in conditions of high humidity, in mountainous terrain, or is used actively and aggressively, it is advisable to replace it more often," Rossiyskaya Gazeta quoted Bakharev as saying on May 16.

The specialist explained that the brake fluid absorbs moisture from the environment and loses its properties, which eventually leads to a "failure" of the brake pedal and loss of braking efficiency, as well as leads to corrosion of system components. This can lead to expensive repairs, he pointed out.

The need for replacement may be indicated by a "padded" brake pedal, an increased braking distance, a lit indicator on the dashboard, darkening of this liquid, the expert noted.
