The role of Turkey and the United States in the negotiations on Ukraine in Istanbul is in monitoring. Alexey Chepa, first deputy chairman of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs, told Izvestia on May 16.

"The role of the United States and Turkey is to monitor. Turkey will be one of the countries that will subsequently bear some kind of guarantee obligations for the implementation of the results of these negotiations," he said.

Chepa called the level of Ukraine's representation at the negotiations in Istanbul acceptable.

The MP stressed that it is difficult to make any assumptions about the course of the negotiations, given that Ukraine has often violated the obligations it first assumed.

"Unfortunately, we have faced this many times. This year, all the truce proposals ended in violations of these agreements," he recalled.

At the same time, according to Chepa, Russia and other countries demonstrate a desire to reach a settlement of the conflict, which gives hope that the parties will be able to move in this direction during the negotiations.

"I think that based on the results of these consultations, which will now be held in this format, a meeting [of US President Donald Trump] will take place. Trump and [Russian President Vladimir] Putin Putin, and it will be decisive in many ways," the deputy concluded.

A trilateral meeting of Russia, Ukraine and Turkey will be held in Istanbul on May 16. On the morning of this day, negotiations were held in the USA-Turkey-Ukraine format. The Russian delegation is headed by Presidential Aide Vladimir Medinsky. It also includes Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Galuzin, Chief of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces Igor Kostyukov and Deputy Defense Minister Alexander Fomin.

Ukraine is represented by Defense Minister Rustem Umerov, First Deputy Foreign Minister Serhiy Kyslytsa, Deputy Head of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) Alexander Poklad, First Deputy Chairman of the Foreign Intelligence Service Oleg Lugovskoy, Deputy Head of the Main Intelligence Directorate Vadim Skibitsky and other officials and officers.

The head of the Russian delegation, Medinsky, noted yesterday that the Russian negotiating group in Istanbul is determined to find possible solutions and common ground on Ukraine. He pointed out that the Russian side considers the direct negotiations in Istanbul as a continuation of the peace process, which was interrupted by Ukraine in 2022.
