The European Union may lower the ceiling on Russian oil prices and strengthen sanctions against the Russian financial sector. This was stated on May 16 by the head of the European Commission (EC) Ursula von der Leyen.

"This package will include, for example, sanctions against Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2. It will include <...>lower oil price caps and increased sanctions against the financial sector in Russia, " she was quoted as saying by Reuters.

Also, according to her, the EU intends to impose sanctions on oil tankers.

On the same day, it was reported that the European Union (EU) countries are considering an initiative to impose a full trade embargo against Russia. According to Politico, the next restrictions against Moscow will be discussed at a meeting of the European Political Community in Tirana, Albania, which will be attended by the United Kingdom and Ukraine.

Earlier, on May 14, the head of the European Commission said that the 17th package of anti-Russian sanctions includes 189 tankers that allegedly transport Russian oil under the flags of other countries. It was clarified that tankers that are blacklisted will be banned from entering EU ports.
