On May 16, US President Donald Trump announced his intention to meet with Russian leader Vladimir Putin as soon as possible.

"As soon as we can arrange it. I was going to drop everything and go (to a meeting. — Ed.). But I want to see my beautiful grandson. And we will do it, but I will tell you that the world has become much safer now. In two or three weeks, we could make it a much safer place. We will analyze several situations," he told reporters in Abu Dhabi, answering a question about the timing of the meeting with Putin.

In addition, Trump stressed that the world has become safer now and expects the situation to improve even more in two to three weeks.

On May 15, Deputy assistant to the US leader Sebastian Gorka announced that a meeting between the two leaders would take place in the near future.

On the same day, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said that restoring relations between Russia and the United States was an extremely difficult and time-consuming process. He stressed that although the issue of Ukraine is of great importance, it is not the only factor that will be taken into account when planning contacts between the Russian and American sides.
