- Wagenknecht called the intention of the German authorities to increase defense spending insane

On May 15, Sarah Wagenknecht, leader of the German Sarah Wagenknecht Union for Reason and Justice party, called the desire of the German authorities to increase defense spending on NATO countries at the suggestion of US President Donald Trump insane.
According to Tagesschau TV channel, earlier in the day, German Foreign Minister Johan Vadefool said he supported the desire to increase defense spending by the North Atlantic Alliance to 5% of their GDP.
"Vadefulh wants to obey Trump and spend 5% of GDP, that is, almost every second euro of the federal budget, on military needs. <...> This is just madness! Without drastic cuts in pensions, spending on healthcare and education, it is impossible to finance this gigantic renovation," Wagenknecht wrote on her page on the social network X (ex. Twitter).
According to the party leader, NATO countries spend about $1.5 trillion on the army. Wagenknecht stressed that Germany needs an independent policy in the interests of its citizens.
In January, Trump announced that he would seek to ensure that the member states of the North Atlantic Treaty increased defense spending to 5% of GDP, and also spent more than Washington on supporting Ukraine.
In turn, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte held a telephone conversation with Pentagon Chief Pete Hegseth, following which he promised to increase the alliance's defense spending.
