Roskachestvo named ways to avoid poisoning when traveling

When traveling, the main risks of food poisoning are associated with the use of low-quality products, violation of the rules of their storage and preparation, as well as the use of low-quality water. On May 15, Elena Specenko, Director of the Center for Food Safety Competencies, told Izvestia how to protect yourself from such situations.
According to her, the main threat is bacterial infection. Pathogens of salmonellosis, E. coli, staphylococcus and other infections can be found in meat, fish, eggs and dairy products that have undergone insufficient heat treatment. It is especially dangerous to test the body with street food if there is no confidence in compliance with sanitary standards when preparing such dishes. As Specenko pointed out, in hot climates, products quickly lose their freshness and, consequently, safety, despite their normal appearance.
Another common source of poisoning is low-quality water, the specialist noted. In many places, tap water does not meet hygiene standards and may contain dangerous bacteria or chemicals. Including ice in drinks, and foods washed with such water can cause digestive disorders. To reduce the risks, Specsenko recommended drinking only bottled water and avoiding iced drinks.
"Choose trusted establishments where dishes are prepared to order rather than stored for a long time. Meat and fish should be well fried or boiled. You should not experiment with exotic foods if you have a sensitive digestion," the expert urged.
In addition, Specenko said that sorbents and probiotics should be included in the travel first-aid kit, as they will help with mild poisoning. If symptoms (nausea, diarrhea, fever) persist for more than a day and your health worsens, you need to seek medical help, concluded the director of the Center for Food Safety Competencies.
Earlier, on May 5, the Georgian Shop cafe was suspended in Saratov, where 10 people were poisoned. It is specified that the reason for the closure of the institution was a message from the regional center for hygiene and epidemiology about the hospitalization of 10 people with acute intestinal infection, four of them with a final diagnosis of salmonellosis.
