Libyan Army forces opened fire on protesters

The forces of the Government of National Unity (GNA) of Libya on Thursday, May 15, opened fire on protesters gathered at the headquarters of Prime Minister Abdelhamid Dbeiba.

According to the Libya Press agency, protests have engulfed several districts of Tripoli: Abu Salim, Ain Zara and Bab Tajoura. Thousands of demonstrators gathered on the Green Square in the city center.

"Protesters demanding the resignation of the Bbeiba government were fired at in front of the presidential Council building," the agency's Telegram channel says.

At the same time, the Libya al-Ahrar TV channel on its Facebook page (ex. Twitter) reported that the head of the Tripoli-based PNU had been assassinated by unknown assailants. They fired at Ali al-Jabari's car, and he managed to survive. There is no information yet about the exact location of the incident, as well as the likely identities and motives of the attackers.

Earlier in the day, protesters gathered outside the Libyan government building. They demanded the resignation of Prime Minister Abdelhamid Dbeiba amid clashes in the city.

On May 14, the Al Wasat newspaper reported that military clashes had again occurred in several areas of Tripoli. Residents of the city expressed concerns that developments in the capital could lead to a large-scale conflict.

Armed clashes in Tripoli began on May 12 after the assassination of the head of the security service at the Libyan Presidential Council, Abdelghani al-Kikli. The local ambulance service reported six casualties. The next day, it became known that at least six people were killed in armed clashes in Tripoli.
