The UK's migration policy will be tightened to reduce the influx of foreigners. This was stated on May 12 by the country's Prime Minister Keir Starmer at a press conference.

"Let me make it clear, everything ends now. We will create a migration system that will be controlled, selective and fair," Sky News channel quoted him as saying.

The Prime Minister commented on the new UK policy on migrants before the publication of the draft White Paper on migration. He stressed that the number of migrants would decrease "significantly," but did not disclose the expected figures.

The plan, published on the UK government's website, titled "Restoring Control over the Immigration System," includes new measures to reduce migration flows. For example, now foreigners who plan to live in the country will need to confirm their level of English. In addition, in order to obtain a permanent residence permit, migrants will have to live in the UK for ten years, not five, as it used to be.

The changes will also affect students. For them, the period of stay in the country will be reduced from five years to 18 months after graduation. In addition, the reform will affect the deportation system: the Ministry of Internal Affairs will receive information about foreigners who have been convicted of crimes and sentenced to prison terms.

According to Sky News, the proposed measures can reduce the flow of migrants by about 98 thousand people per year.

Earlier, on March 11, the Politico newspaper reported that the European Union (EU) plans to develop a common system for the return of migrants to their homeland. The project involves regulating the process of expelling migrants, tougher penalties for non-compliance with the deportation decree and the creation of "return points" outside the EU, where migrants awaiting deportation will be accommodated.
