A large number of people gathered in the square in front of St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican, celebrating the election of the new pope. The participants of the event exchange their impressions and chant "Vive Papa!". On May 8, Izvestia showed footage from the scene.

"A historic event has happened right now. A new pope was elected. For the first time in history, he became an American cardinal. His name is Robert Francis Prevos. He chose the name Leo XIV. Just a few minutes ago, he read his first speech from the balcony of St. Peter's Cathedral. Well, now a real celebration is unfolding here on the square," said journalist Anastasia Volosatova.

According to her, people are chanting "Vive Papa!" and exchanging impressions. Some people have already started to disperse, but most continue to celebrate.

Cardinal Robert Prevost from the United States was elected the new pope earlier that day. He is the first American cardinal with Latin American roots, prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops, representative of the Augustinian Order. As pontiff, he took the name Leo XIV.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has congratulated the new pope on his election. He also wished success in fulfilling his "lofty mission, as well as good health and well-being."
