Russian Security Council Secretary Sergei Shoigu met with the head of the Libyan National Army Khalifa Haftar in Moscow. This was announced on May 8 by the press service of the Russian Security Council.

"During the conversation, issues related to the security situation in Libya, as well as in North Africa and the Sahara-Sahel region were discussed," the press service said, as cited by TASS.

Shoigu said that they emphasized their commitment to the process of political settlement in Libya, as well as the importance of supporting international efforts to resolve conflicts on the African continent and combat terrorism.

On May 7, Russian President Vladimir Putin said at a meeting with his counterpart from the Republic of Congo Denis Sassou Nguesso that strengthening ties with Africa is one of the priorities of Russia's foreign policy. According to the Russian leader, the two states are in solidarity in their approaches to solving many pressing global issues, and the participation of the Republic of the Congo in events dedicated to the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War confirms the friendly nature of bilateral relations.
