An auto expert explained a way to compensate for low-quality fuel

Unstable fuel quality at gas stations is typical for many regions of the Russian Federation. Low-quality fuel can cause increased deposits, accelerated wear of engine parts, and other problems, but they can be compensated for with properly selected engine oil. Pavel Bakharev, technical expert at Sintec Lubricants, told about this on May 5.

As the expert explained, when low-quality fuel is burned, more soot, sludge and acidic compounds are formed, which enter the engine and mix with the engine oil. As a result, the oil loses its properties faster and can form deposits that clog the channels of the lubrication system. The load on antioxidant and detergent-dispersant additives also increases.

"High thermal stability and oxidation resistance are important for the oil to withstand elevated temperatures and not lose its properties under the influence of oxides and soot. In conditions of irregular access to high-quality fuel, synthetic oil is the best choice. It is more stable at high temperatures, has better detergent properties and retains its characteristics longer," the Rossiyskaya Gazeta quotes Bakharev.

The specialist advised choosing an oil with an alkaline number (TBN) of at least 10. Gasoline engines are recommended for oil with the following specifications: ACEA A3/B4, API SN/SM or higher. For diesel engines (without DPF particulate filter) — ACEA E4/E7, API CL-4.

Some motorists are mistaken, believing that this oil is suitable for old cars or those that are running out of motor life.

On April 11, Roman Sokuev, head of the Sintec Lubricants Technical expertise center, said that due to the operation of the start-stop system, additional loads on the engine and engine oil arise, which requires special attention from the car owner.
