Simion allowed the appointment of Giorgescu as Prime Minister of Romania

George Simion, the leader of the nationalist Alliance for the Unification of Romanians party, who won the first round of the presidential election, may appoint former presidential candidate Calin Georgescu as prime minister. This was reported on May 5 by the Financial Times (FT).
"Therefore, as president, I can change the members of the constitutional court, members of the secret services, so I can guarantee fair elections, and I can be an intermediary to find a majority in parliament. This is how we can present him (Calin Georgescu — Ed.) as Prime Minister," Simion said.
The first round of the Romanian presidential election was held on November 24, 2024. According to official data, independent candidate Georgescu was in the lead with 22.94% of the vote. Elena Lasconi, leader of the opposition Union for the Salvation of Romania party, has 19.17% of the vote. George Simion took the fourth place with 14.17% of the votes. The second round was scheduled to take place on December 8, as none of the candidates was able to gain more than 50%.
Later, on March 9, the Central Election Commission of Romania refused to register Georgescu as a candidate, deciding that the documents submitted by him did not comply with the requirements of the law. This decision sparked protests in Bucharest, which escalated into clashes with the police.
On May 5, it became known that Simion was leading the Romanian presidential election in the first round after counting 100% of the votes at polling stations in the country. Together with Simion, an independent candidate, Nicusor Dan, the mayor of Bucharest, entered the second round of elections.
