Oppositionist Simion leads in the first round of presidential elections in Romania

Opposition candidate George Simion leads the Romanian presidential election in the first round with a score of 40.96% after counting 100% of votes at polling stations in the country. This was announced on May 5 on the website of the Central Election Commission (CEC) of Romania.
According to the agency, the head of the nationalist Alliance for the Unification of Romanians (AUR) party, George Simion, who won 40.96% of the vote, and the independent candidate, Bucharest Mayor Nicusor Dan, who received 20.99% of the total votes, are going to the second round of elections.
The candidate from the ruling coalition, Crin Antonescu, became the third, gaining 20.07% of the vote, which is 86.8 thousand less than Dan.
Simion has already stated that he dedicates his victory in the first round to Calin Georgescu, who won the elections in the fall, but the Constitutional Court of Romania canceled the results of the vote and scheduled a repeat presidential election.
It is reported that the second round of elections in Romania is scheduled to take place on May 18.
The first round of the Romanian presidential election was held on November 24, 2024. According to official data, independent candidate Calin Georgescu was in the lead with 22.94% of the vote. Elena Lasconi, leader of the opposition Union for the Salvation of Romania party, has 19.17% of the vote. George Simion took the fourth place with 14.17% of the votes. The second round was scheduled to take place on December 8, as none of the candidates was able to gain more than 50%.
Later, on March 9, the Central Election Commission of Romania refused to register Georgescu as a candidate, deciding that the documents submitted by him did not comply with the requirements of the law. This decision sparked protests in Bucharest, which escalated into clashes with the police.
