Romania plays an important role in the military strategy of the United States and NATO in the Black Sea region. This was reported on May 4 by The National Interest.

"On the military front, Romania has been the most important logistics hub for the US armed forces for more than two decades. Its strategic geography, as the easternmost European member of NATO, allowed it to support American operations in Iraq and Afghanistan," the article says.

It is noted that there are still a number of significant problems in the country, such as corruption and governance deficiencies. At the same time, the authors of the material emphasize the consistent preservation by the authorities of their "pro-American and pro-NATO positions."

Romania is also hosting the American Aegis Ashore missile defense system, which protects the country from potential Iranian missile threats. Romania exceeds the NATO defense spending threshold of 2% and invests heavily in American military systems, including F-35, F-16, Patriot missile batteries, HIMARS launchers, Piranha armored vehicles, Abrams tanks, drones and more," the National Interest points out.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) on Friday, May 2, announced the cancellation of the visa waiver program for Romania. The agency completed the check, and the status of the state was canceled. Romania may be re-considered for inclusion in the program in the future if it meets the eligibility criteria.
