Power outages in Spain, Portugal and other regions of Western Europe may be related to renewable energy issues. Alexander Frolov, Deputy Director General of the National Energy Institute, told Izvestia about this on April 28.

"At the moment, what is happening looks as if the production of electric energy from renewable energy sources has sharply decreased, and traditional generation, which was entrusted with additional obligations for the production and supply of electric energy, simply could not cope," he said.

According to Frolov, on that day, energy production at wind farms decreased in the morning, and therefore additional supplies from other sources were needed to provide consumers. But they were not organized by the time the demand for electricity increased, which led to the "collapse" of the electricity grid.

"In Portugal, during April and March, the share of renewable energy sources in total production was up to 90%. In Spain, it is less from 70% to 75%. And considering that there is no coal generation in Portugal anymore, this is a very wise European policy of abandoning coal generation. There is clearly not enough gas generation. The nuclear facilities located in Spain cannot compensate for any loss of electrical energy," the specialist explained.

Large-scale power outages in Spain and Portugal became known earlier in the day. It was clarified that this affected the operation of public transport, power lines and telephone communication in some parts of Madrid, Barcelona and Lisbon. Later, Spanish and Portuguese media reported that specialists had already begun work on restoring power supply.

Later, Spanish political scientist Santiago Armesilla reported a partial resumption of electricity supply in Spain. Madrid residents have been without electricity for more than five hours. In other regions, the duration of outages ranged from three to five hours.
