AFAD recorded 266 aftershocks after the earthquake in Istanbul


The Office of Emergency Situations and Natural Disasters (AFAD) recorded 266 aftershocks after the 6.2 magnitude earthquake in Istanbul. This was reported by the Daily Sabah newspaper on April 24.
"As of 9:00 a.m. (local time, corresponding to Moscow time. On April 24, after an earthquake of magnitude 6.2, a total of 266 aftershocks were registered, of which 258 were of magnitude from 0 to 4, 7 from 4 to 5, and one aftershock was of magnitude above 5," the publication says.
According to AFAD, the aftershocks are concentrated on a 10-15-kilometer area east of the epicenter. In addition, tremors may continue in the coming days.
It is specified that after the earthquake, more than 10 thousand calls were made to the emergency call center. Of these complaints, 296 are related to damage to buildings. The newspaper adds that the Turkish government is calling for the damaged houses to be reported and not to enter them until official inspections are completed.
Earlier, on April 23, the head of the Turkish Ministry of Health, Kemal Memisoglu, said that almost 240 Turkish citizens were injured in the earthquake in Istanbul. Most of the injuries were caused by falling from a height, as many residents tried to escape amid the panic.
On the same day, the first 3.9-magnitude tremors were recorded at 12:13 p.m. (local time, coincides with Moscow time) off the coast of Istanbul's Silivri district. The depth of the earthquake was 6.99 km. Aftershocks followed the earthquake.
