On April 23, Tatyana Simonova, a general practitioner and cardiologist at the Sberbank Health medical company, told Izvestia about which other types of coffee are useful, and who is forbidden to drink this drink at all.
"The caffeine contained in coffee beans helps to increase concentration and performance, and also reduces the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, Parkinson's and Alzheimer's diseases," the specialist noted.
According to her, natural brewed coffee with the addition of, for example, cinnamon, cardamom or ginger also belongs to useful types. This drink has all the above advantages, and spices help to improve blood circulation and reduce inflammatory processes in the body. Coffee with cinnamon, in turn, can be useful for people with diabetes, as it helps maintain stable blood sugar levels.
In addition, Simonova explained that regular instant coffee without any additives is also considered a useful type, although the content of useful components in such a drink is lower than in grain.
"Coffee with added sugar, syrups or cream is considered harmful, since drinking such a drink increases the risk of developing obesity, diabetes and atherosclerosis. For example, the energy value of a latte with syrup can be about 300-400 kcal, which is equivalent to eating dessert," the doctor warned.
Other harmful options, the expert noted, include instant coffee with artificial additives, such as flavors and preservatives. Such ingredients, in turn, can negatively affect liver function. In order for coffee to have a positive effect on health, the following measures must be followed when using it.
The therapist explained that adults can consume up to 400 mg of caffeine per day, which corresponds to about 1-3 cups of coffee. At the same time, it is recommended to drink coffee without sugar, cream or syrups, but you can add milk of animal or vegetable origin to it to taste. It is worth noting that it is most useful to drink coffee after meals before 15:00, so as not to disturb sleep. When drinking drinks, it is also necessary to pay attention to the individual characteristics of the body, such as intolerance to the components and possible allergic reactions.
"People with arrhythmias should stop drinking coffee, as caffeine can cause cardiac arrhythmias, as well as patients with uncontrolled hypertension, because this drink increases blood pressure for a short time," Simonova said.
In addition, she recommends avoiding coffee consumption in the presence of gastritis or peptic ulcer, as caffeine increases the production of hydrochloric acid, which irritates the gastric mucosa. It is also better to stop drinking this drink with gastroesophageal reflux, a disease in which stomach contents are thrown into the esophagus, since coffee can lead to a decrease in the tone of the esophageal sphincter.
In addition, the specialist warned that people with anxiety disorders, panic attacks or sleep disorders should also be excluded from drinking coffee, as caffeine exacerbates the symptoms of these conditions. At the same time, pregnant women should not drink coffee, as well as people treated with certain drugs, for example, those containing sodium levothyroxine, since coffee reduces the absorption of this substance by the body.
