- The political scientist assessed the role of the European Union in the negotiations on Ukraine

The United States assigns a very modest role to the European Union (EU) in the negotiations on the settlement of the Ukrainian crisis, there is no need to speak about the full participation of Brussels in this process. Political analyst Alexander Asafov told Izvestia about this on April 18.
He stressed that the Americans have quite an "applied" understanding of the EU's role in the negotiations. The association imposed anti-Russian sanctions, and in order to lift them, Washington intends to involve Brussels in the settlement process, Asafov said.
The expert added that another goal of the United States is the desire to shift the task of supporting Ukraine to the EU. According to him, Washington's plan may not work, as the latest proposal by the head of European diplomacy, Kai Kallas, to create a fund for Kiev of € 40 billion did not receive the support of the countries of the association.
"Of course, there is no need to talk about full participation in the negotiations. The Americans assign a very modest role to the EU, which still needs to be financially justified. And the European Union has other goals and objectives, including Britain, which is not a member of the European Union. Therefore, I do not think that they are able to get some kind of jointly agreed position," the political scientist concluded.
The day before in Paris, the US delegation held a meeting with representatives of the Kiev regime and European countries on the settlement of the conflict in Ukraine. Following their results, French President Emmanuel Macron said that the countries would "redouble their efforts to achieve peace in Ukraine." Later, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio noted that EU countries should be involved in the settlement so that the lifting of European sanctions could become part of the agreement.
On the same day, he had a telephone conversation with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. The United States Department of State reported that Washington had presented "the contours of a lasting and lasting peace to all sides."
Bloomberg, in turn, reported on April 17 that the United States plans to achieve a cease-fire in Ukraine within a few weeks.
