Easter services are one of the most solemn and magnificent of the year. The most frequent chant that can be heard in churches on the holiday is the Easter troparion. Izvestia tells us what it means and when to sing it.
What is the Easter Troparion?
The Easter Troparion, or Easter Troparion, is the main hymn of the Easter holiday in the Orthodox Church and other churches following the Byzantine rites.
It is sung during the Easter service and then repeated throughout the Easter celebration until it is given on the 40th day. The Easter Troparion is performed at this time during various services, the celebration of the sacraments and prayers.
There is no single version of how the Easter troparion is performed. There are at least a hundred different chants to the words of the troparion. They are united by joyful intonation, rhythmic and melodic vivacity.
Christ is Risen from the dead: the text of the Easter Troparion
The Easter Troparion is written in Church Slavonic. It consists of a short text that is easy to remember and repeat.:
"Christ has risen from the dead, restoring death to death and giving life to those who are in the grave."
In modern Russian, the Easter troparion can be stated as follows:
"Christ rose from the dead, conquering death by death, and giving life to those who lie in the tomb."
In churches where services are held in other languages, the Easter Troparion may be performed in translation.
"Christ is risen from the dead, death is corrected by death": interpretation
The troparion itself is a short chant that reveals the essence of the holiday. It can also be dedicated to a saint, glorifying his life and holiness. The Troparion is not taken from the Holy Scriptures, it is neither a psalm nor a biblical song.
The Easter Troparion is very brief, but it expresses the fullness of the Christian faith. It tells us that Christ descended into hell, rose from the dead after a martyr's death and thereby redeemed the sins of people, both past and future. Thus, the Lord granted life to those who were already in their graves, and promised eternal life to those who believe in him.

The first performance of the Easter troparion takes place during the procession before Easter Matins. The clergy and parishioners gather in front of the locked gates of the temple and sing the troparion three times in turn.
During the Easter service itself, the troparion is used as the chorus to the verses of the sung psalms. It is also sung three times after each song of the Paschal canon, at the beginning and at the end of the Paschal hours, at the end of the stichera and after the dismissal of matins.
The Easter Troparion is repeated three times throughout Holy Week at the beginning of each matins, Vespers, liturgy, and prayer service. The Easter Troparion also precedes the rites of baptism, funeral services, and the consecration of anything. From St. Thomas Week to the giving of Easter, the troparion can not only be sung, but also read before church services and services.
During the celebration of Easter, the Troparion is also performed before meals instead of the "Our Father" prayer, at the beginning of the all-night vigil and at the end of the liturgy. In Orthodox educational institutions, the Easter Troparion is read before classes begin.
