Saudi Arabia intends to repay Syria's debts to the World Bank, which will open up the possibility of allocating grants to rebuild and support the public sector of the Arab Republic. This was reported by the Reuters news agency on April 14.

"This may be a sign that important support for Syria from the Arab countries of the Persian Gulf is beginning to materialize," the publication notes.

Such a move would be the first known case of Riyadh financing Damascus since the transfer of power by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

According to Reuters, Syria's debt to the World Bank is about $15 million. Initially, Damascus planned to pay off debts at the expense of assets frozen abroad, but this intention was not realized due to a lack of foreign currency.

The article also says that representatives of the World Bank are considering the possibility of providing Syria with financing to help rebuild the country's energy system, as well as to support salaries in the public sector.

On March 21, Russian President Vladimir Putin held telephone talks with Qatar's Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, during which the leaders discussed the situation in Syria. During the talks, the importance of preserving the unity of Syria was emphasized.

Earlier, on February 24, it was reported that the European Union (EU) suspended sanctions against Syria in the fields of energy and transport. It was clarified that this measure is part of the efforts of the association to support an inclusive political transition in Syria, as well as its rapid economic recovery, reconstruction and stabilization.
