- WSJ has learned about Iran's readiness to return to previous levels of uranium enrichment

Iran could return to the terms of the 2015 nuclear deal, provided that the U.S. government complies with a number of conditions. The Wall Street Journal reported this on April 12, citing Iranian and European officials.
The original nuclear agreement, concluded in 2015, allowed Iran to possess small amounts of uranium enriched to 3.67% for civilian purposes such as nuclear energy and scientific research. At the same time, the country is currently enriching uranium to 60%.
"Iran would be ready to return to the same levels of nuclear enrichment that the 2015 deal allowed," the publication says.
As conditions, Tehran puts forward the prompt easing of sanctions related to the nuclear sector, the unfreezing of multibillion-dollar assets and the cessation of Washington's pressure on Chinese buyers of Iran's oil.
At the same time, The New York Times newspaper, citing a senior American official, claims that US President Donald Trump's special envoy for the Middle East, Stephen Witkoff, did not offer Iran to completely abandon its uranium enrichment program at the talks in Oman.
"Witkoff, who is leading the negotiations, did not suggest that Iran completely abandon its enrichment program. Instead, the focus was on ensuring that the country did not use its existing material as a weapon," the article says.
Earlier in the day, the first round of negotiations between the United States and Iran on lifting sanctions and nuclear issues ended in Oman. During the meeting, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi and the US President's special envoy for the Middle East, Stephen Witkoff, exchanged the positions of their governments on these issues in the presence of the Omani Foreign Minister.
At the end of the meeting, the Iranian Foreign Ministry announced the continuation of negotiations in a week. Araqchi said that during the second round, Iran will discuss with the United States the framework of possible agreements. In turn, Trump noted that the negotiations on Iran are going well.
