US President Donald Trump's decision to suspend the imposition of duties against his trading partners has shown China that it has a "sore point." This was reported on April 11 by The New York Times.

"Mr. Xi [Jinping] realized that his opponent has a sore point. No matter how reckless and ruthless Mr. Trump may seem to some parts of the world, in the person of Mr. Xi and China, he is fighting a leader and a party state that have a long history of single—minded politics," the article says.

The newspaper writes that the US president is faced with the possible consequences of the imposition of duties, namely a fall in the stock market and the prospect of shaking the dollar's dominant position in the world.

On April 8, The New York Times reported that Trump postponed the imposition of duties on 75 countries for 90 days due to panic among Americans - the president described the situation on the markets after the introduction of tariffs as "quite gloomy."

CNBC, citing the White House, reported on April 10 that Trump had increased duties on goods from China to 145%. U.S. Vice President Jay D. Vance said Trump wants peace, but also wants fair trade and "greater self-sufficiency for the American economy."
