The Canadian government will begin negotiations with the administration of US President Donald Trump on their tariff policy in early May. This was announced on April 11 by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney after a meeting of the Cabinet committee.

According to him, a lengthy and meaningful discussion took place during the meeting. In particular, the general situation over the past week, Trump's tariff policy and the reactions of other countries, including China, were discussed.

"We discussed our response to these tariffs, our basic strategy [of retaliatory measures] <...> so that the next government, which Canadians elect, is in the best position for negotiations with the United States, which, as we agreed with the President [of the United States Donald Trump], will start in early May," Carney said.

On April 2, Trump announced large-scale trade measures: base tariffs of 10% are being introduced for all products supplied to the United States. For the EU, this figure has been raised to 20%, and for China — to 34%. CNBC later reported that the American leader had increased duties on goods from China to 145%.

In turn, Carney said on April 3 that Ottawa would impose duties of 25% on all imported cars from the United States that are not subject to the North American Trade Agreement (USMCA). Later, on April 7, he stressed that the likelihood of a recession in the United States had increased significantly due to the tariffs imposed by Trump.
