Lower prices for Chinese goods in Russia are likely due to the trade war between the United States and China. Maxim Chirkov, Associate Professor of the Department of Economic Policy and Economic Measurements at GUU, shared this opinion in an interview with Izvestia on April 11.

"Yes, I think that, in principle, lower prices for imported goods are quite realistic, because the trade war that is breaking out between the United States and China will really release very large volumes of goods that were intended for the US and Chinese markets. And these goods will need to be redirected somewhere," the expert noted.

According to him, the main alternative sales markets will be developing countries — Russia, India and some other countries of the global south, therefore, in conditions of stability of the Russian ruble and even its strengthening, it is likely that prices for imported goods will decrease.

The expert stressed that an increase in supply would lead to cheaper goods.

"Here, it seems to me, if there are more goods, then, accordingly, the prices are lower — here this law will work, again, in conditions of such a terrible confrontation between the United States and China," Chirkov summed up.

On April 10, CNBC reported that US President Donald Trump had increased tariffs on goods from China to 145%. In turn, US Vice President Jay D. Vance said that Trump wants peace, but also wants fair trade and "greater self-sufficiency for the American economy."

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian, in turn, said there were no winners in the trade war with duties. He also noted that if the United States insists on unleashing a war with duties and a trade war, then China will go to the end.
