Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said that he considers China as a partner of the European Union (EU). He announced this on April 11 at a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing.

"Spain will always work to strengthen strong and balanced relations between China and the EU," the EFE news agency quoted Sanchez as saying.

The Prime Minister stressed that the kingdom's focus will always be on "developing mutually beneficial relations" between Beijing and Madrid.

The Chinese leader, in turn, said that China is ready to establish a "comprehensive strategic partnership" with Spain to improve the welfare of the two countries.

German Finance Minister Joerg Kukis said on April 9 that EU countries need to conclude new trade deals against the background of the introduction of US duties. He said that the European Union needs to resume trade negotiations with Indonesia, India and Malaysia.

On April 8, political scientist Konstantin Kalachev expressed the opinion that the President of the United States, Donald Trump, may be trying to break up the EU, including by imposing import duties. According to the expert, the US leader is setting very strict conditions for Europe to delay the introduction of new tariffs in the form of compensation for a trade deficit of $350 billion. According to the political scientist, this may divide the countries of the association.
