Istanbul's Prosecutor General's Office is demanding up to three years in prison for 139 participants in unsanctioned protests related to the detention of the city's mayor, Ekrem Imamoglu. This was reported on April 8 by the A Haber TV channel.

"The indictment emphasizes that the gathered crowd, despite the notification of the ban [on rallies], stubbornly refused to disperse and provoked riots by attacking the police cordon," the material says.

According to the TV channel, law enforcement agencies warned the protesters about the ban on rallies and eventually detained some of the demonstrators. The crowd prevented the arrest, directed lasers at the police officers, and threw stones, sticks, and bottles at the security forces.

The prosecutor's office is now demanding that the protesters be sentenced to six months to three years in prison for violating the local law on assemblies and demonstrations. Any mass rallies were banned in Istanbul from March 19 to March 23.

Law enforcement agencies issued a warrant for Imamoglu's detention on March 19. An anti-corruption operation has been launched against the Istanbul administration. The mayor of the city was arrested on March 23. After that, the Interior Ministry announced that Imamoglu had been temporarily suspended from his duties. Later, mass protests began in Turkey in connection with the detention of the mayor.
