The Pentagon is considering the possibility of withdrawing up to 10,000 US troops from Eastern Europe. This was reported on April 8 by NBC News, citing American and European officials.

"The units in question are part of the 20,000 people that [former US President] Joe Biden's administration deployed in 2022 to strengthen the defense of countries bordering Ukraine," the publication clarifies.

NBC News notes that the withdrawal of American units will increase the concerns of the European Union (EU) countries that "the United States is abandoning its long-time allies in Europe, who consider Russia a growing threat."

As the TV channel pointed out, the administration of US President Donald Trump intends to ensure that European allies take more responsibility for their own defense, which will allow the United States to focus its military resources on China and other priorities.

On March 19, NBC News, citing sources, reported on the possible intention of the Trump administration to abandon the command of NATO forces in Europe. According to the publication, America is considering a plan to abandon the role of Supreme Commander of the united armed forces.

In January, Trump said that he was not sure about continuing to sponsor NATO, as the United States protects the bloc's members, but does not receive assistance in return. According to him, he will seek to ensure that the states of the North Atlantic Alliance increase defense spending to 5% of GDP.
