A miraculous event is described in the Gospel of John. According to legend, the righteous Lazarus lived in the village of Bethany and was well acquainted with Christ, who more than once enjoyed his hospitality. However, when Lazarus died of a serious illness, Jesus, despite his strong friendship, did not rush to his aid.
The reason for this was the desire of the Lord to perform the most incredible of miracles. Therefore, when he learned about his friend's illness, he said: "This illness is not for death, but for the glory of God." That's exactly what happened.
Four days after Lazarus' death, Christ appeared in Bethany and asked to be taken to the burial place. On the spot, Jesus ordered the stone that covered the entrance to the cave with the coffin to be removed, and resurrected the deceased, whose body was already beginning to smolder.
The news of the miracle spread quickly around the area. People recognized the miraculous resurrection, including those who had previously doubted the divine essence of Christ. It was thanks to this event that many came to believe in the Savior. Lazarus himself lived for another 30 years and was elected bishop on the island of Cyprus.
The tradition of celebrating Lazarus Saturday developed around the 5th century, although the history of the holiday dates back to early Christianity. The celebration was widely celebrated in Byzantium, where it was known as the feast of hope and resurrection. Later, it was celebrated in other countries.
Every year, the holiday is celebrated on the sixth day of the sixth week of Great Lent — on the eve of the Entry of the Lord into Jerusalem (Palm Sunday). The date varies from year to year. For example, last year Lazarev Saturday was celebrated on April 27. In 2025, the holiday will be celebrated two weeks earlier — on April 12.

On this day, a festive service is held in churches. Clergymen wear white robes instead of the usual black ones. During the liturgy, the faithful glorify God's miracle, thanking the Lord for his great mercy to the human race. Prayers are also recited for the deceased, symbolizing the connection of the living with the departed and faith in eternal life.
In addition, willow branches are harvested on Lazarus Saturday, which are then illuminated in the temple, preparing to celebrate another important event — the entry of the Lord into Jerusalem, or Palm Sunday. In some regions, they bake a special bread with nuts and dried fruits — "lazarka".
Also, according to tradition, believers congratulate each other on the holiday, remembering one of their main miracles of Christ. The easiest way to remember the celebration is to send a greeting card. The images can be downloaded for free on the Internet or found on Orthodox websites.
The traditional themes on Lazarus Saturday are the canonical depiction of the Savior surrounded by the apostles and the righteous Lazarus emerging from the burial cave. You can also find pictures of churches, temples in festive decorations and willow branches that precede the holiday celebrated the next day.
