Several cities of Central Russia were covered with snow in early April. In Smolensk, the daily record for precipitation was even broken. In Moscow, snowdrifts reached 20 cm high, which is the third result in the history of meteorological observations for these days. Public utilities had to bring equipment and people to the streets in order to quickly eliminate the consequences. The winter weather will continue at least until the middle of next week, meteorologists say. For more information about when to expect the return of spring, see the Izvestia article.

How much snow has fallen in Moscow

Sunday, April 6, was ranked third in the history of meteorological observations in Moscow in terms of precipitation for that day, Tatyana Pozdnyakova, a leading specialist at the Meteonosti news agency, told Izvestia.

— We expected that more than 10 mm of precipitation would fall and a new daily record would be set, but this did not happen. Only 7 mm of precipitation fell at VDNKh, and the snow cover reached 9 cm on Monday, April 7," she said.

However, according to her, the snow cover turned out to be uneven. So, closer to the center of Moscow, 13 mm of precipitation fell during the day.

— The norm for April is 37 mm of precipitation, that is, 20% of it fell at the VDNKh weather station, and somewhere more, - added Tatiana Pozdnyakova.

The city services of the capital had to intensively eliminate the consequences of the snowfall. Snow removal equipment reappeared on the streets, and driveways and pedestrian zones were treated with reagents to prevent ice, the Moscow City Management complex reported.

"Special attention is being paid to cleaning sidewalks, approaches to public transport stops, metro and MCC stations, railway stations and platforms, social facilities and the consumer market," they stressed.

On Monday, roofs of apartment buildings, protruding elements of building facades and funnels of drains were cleared of snow and ice in the capital. The work sites were fenced off with special tapes so that pedestrians would not be in the area of falling snow.

"City services continue to deal with the effects of the weather. Manual cleaning crews and utility equipment are working on the streets," the Municipal Management Complex assured.

The April snowfall in the capital was not the heaviest in history, but the daily precipitation record was set in Smolensk, said Tatiana Pozdnyakova. 11 mm of precipitation fell there, which exceeded the achievements of 1961 and 1992.

How long will winter last in April

Snowfall over the capital region will last at least until Wednesday, April 9, said Alexander Shuvalov, head of the Meteo forecasting center.

— The snowfall will continue, increasing in strength, then weakening, almost until Wednesday. So there will be more work for public utilities," he stressed.

It is difficult to predict how much snow will fall in the end, Tatiana Pozdnyakova added.

"Because the variation in precipitation and snow cover height across the capital region is quite significant," she said. — snowdrifts are lower in Klin and Dmitrov, and higher in the east and south. In the south of Moscow, the snow cover reached 20 cm on Monday morning.

By Tuesday, April 8, the center of the cyclone, which covered the capital region with snow, will shift towards the Ivanovo region.

— But we are still expecting snow at night from Monday to Tuesday. And on Tuesday, snow fell across Moscow and the region, sometimes heavy. From 2 to 4 mm of precipitation may fall, and the increase in snow cover will be visible," she believes.

With the air temperature close to zero degrees, the snow that fell on Monday is gradually melting. In addition, there is also an influx of heat from the soil, because it was warmed up on the eve of the snowfall.

— In the following days, the air temperature will be negative at night and during the day, and on Wednesday the air temperature will be below normal by almost 9 degrees. Therefore, we cannot expect the snow to melt soon," said Tatiana Pozdnyakova.

The snow cover will come off by the middle of next week, she added.

"By Easter, which is celebrated on April 20, the capital region should be free of snow cover," she said.

The long-awaited warming will come from the shores of the Baltic, Alexander Shuvalov added. In Kaliningrad, according to him, on Saturday, April 12, it will warm up to 12 degrees, and from April 13-14, the air temperature will approach 20 degrees.

— And this weather with a time lag of two or three days is also being broadcast to the central regions of the European part of Russia. So by the middle of next week, Moscow, Kaluga, and Bryansk will finally say goodbye to the snowdrifts that fell from the sky," he assured.

How to monitor your health during the cold snap

During the cold snap, it is important to take care of your health, Polina Litvinenko, head of the polyclinic at the Alexandrov station of the Russian Railways Medicine Design Bureau, reminded Izvestia.

— First of all, do not allow hypothermia. It is fraught with a decrease in immunity, and this is fertile ground for viral infections. Choose clothes according to the weather, do not forget about a hat or hood, gloves and socks, check the weather forecast before going outside," she said.

It is also important to follow the sleep regime, the doctor added.

— Everyone has an individual norm: 7-8 hours is enough for someone, more or less for someone. Create comfortable conditions for a good night's sleep: ventilate the bedroom, use a comfortable pillow, blanket and mattress, and put down your mobile phone at least an hour before bedtime. Get up and go to bed at the same time both on weekdays and on weekends," she stressed.

You should not neglect sports, the doctor added. These can be light outdoor walks, as well as indoor activities such as yoga, swimming, and fitness.

— Sports will help activate muscles, improve blood circulation, and give you a boost of energy and good mood. Add a 15-30-minute morning workout to your daily schedule — it will support your immune system and set you up for a productive day," the doctor emphasized.

After winter, the body may experience a deficiency of vitamins and minerals, Polina Litvinenko drew attention to. You can replenish it with a varied diet. It is advisable to include more fresh fruits and vegetables in the diet.

— Also eat enough protein: meat, fish, eggs, poultry, legumes, complex carbohydrates such as cereals, cereals, whole—grain bread and unsaturated fats such as nuts, avocados, seeds, fatty fish, — said the doctor.

If you feel unwell at first, you should contact specialists, she added. A breakdown may indicate that the body is experiencing deficiencies that need to be replenished, so it is important to consult a doctor so that he can schedule examinations and make recommendations.
