Strengthening the defense potential of the European Union (EU) should not lead to a hidden increase in military aid to Ukraine. This was stated on April 4 by Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto at a press conference following a meeting of NATO foreign ministers in Brussels.

"We also disagree with the position that the defense of Europe means the defense of Ukraine. Increasing the defense capability of the European Union means increasing the defense capability of the European Union, and not investing in the defense capability of a state that is not a member of NATO or the EU," Szijjarto said during the broadcast, which was conducted on the M1 YouTube channel.

He noted that most of the European countries interpret the EU's increased armament as a strategy to prolong the Ukrainian conflict. Szijjarto stressed that Hungary does not accept such a position.

The minister clarified that no EU country is in a state of armed conflict and therefore does not need protection. He noted that the claim that Ukraine protects Europe is not true.

Szijjarto added that the European Union should sit back and support the initiatives of US President Donald Trump to reach peace agreements.

On March 26, Szijjarto expressed hope for a long-term ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine. He noted that the Russian Federation and the United States are interested in achieving success in peace negotiations.

Later, on March 31, he called the EU's attempts to speed up the process of Ukraine's accession to the union a disgrace. According to Szijjarto, the countries of the Western Balkans are much more suitable for this.
