The High Representative of the European Union (EU) for Foreign Affairs, Kaya Kallas, told reporters on April 3 that she did not consider the defense ministers of the union countries who arrived in Warsaw for an informal meeting of the EU Defense Council. The text of her speech is published on the website of the European External Action Service.

Callas was asked why only 10 ministers from 27 member states of the association are present at the meeting of the heads of the Ministry of Defense, and what kind of "signal to the world" this is.

"I do not know the numbers. There were a lot of ministers yesterday. To be honest, I didn't count them. I hope there will be as many of them today," she said.

The head of the European Diplomacy noted that a meeting of the foreign ministers of the NATO member states would be held soon, and pointed out the importance of not only meetings, but also joint actions of the European countries.

Earlier, on April 1, it was reported that US Secretary of State Marco Rubio will take part in a meeting of NATO foreign ministers to be held in Brussels on April 2-4. It was clarified that the meeting would discuss the alliance's security priorities, including increasing defense spending and "ensuring lasting peace in Ukraine."

Ahead of his return to the White House in January, US President Donald Trump has increased pressure on NATO members to increase defense spending to 5%. Currently, only 23 of the 32 NATO countries achieve the defense spending target of 2% of GDP. In turn, the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said on March 11 that the EU defense industry was significantly lagging behind the Russian one. According to her, EU countries should spend more than 3% of GDP on defense spending.
