The doctor warned about the danger of UV rays even in cloudy weather

Sun protection is critically important for skin health. Ultraviolet radiation causes cell damage, which leads to premature aging — wrinkles and pigmentation appear. Isita Khanalieva, a dermatocosmetologist, told Izvestia about this on April 3.
UV rays increase the risk of skin cancer, including melanoma, and reduce the immune response. The expert noted that the choice of sunscreen is important and should be based on the skin type, as well as on the composition and texture of cosmetics. Different formats: foundation products, makeup bases, powders, creams and sprays can provide sun protection, but they have their own characteristics that should be considered.
The doctor explained that Sun Protection Factor (SPF) moisturizers containing oils and glycerin are suitable for dry skin. Owners of oily skin should pay attention to light non-comedogenic formulas in gel or mattifying texture. Balanced products with powdery components for the T-zone of the face and moisturizing for the cheeks are suitable for combination skin. For people with sensitive skin, the expert recommends choosing mineral formulations with a minimum amount of additives and without flavors.
However, Khanalieva clarified: in addition to the protection factor, it is important to pay attention to additional components.
"The presence of antioxidants, such as vitamins C and E, is beneficial in the composition of sunscreen. They neutralize free radicals resulting from exposure to UV radiation. Water resistance is important if you plan to exercise or swim. And ingredients such as glycerin or hyaluronic acid will help keep the skin hydrated," the dermatocosmetologist shared.
The specialist suggested that with a low level of the UV index (0-2), SPF 15-30 can be dispensed with, and SPF 50 should be applied to the skin at a high value (6-7).
"It is important to remember that protection is needed even in cloudy weather. About 80% of ultraviolet rays pass through clouds, so the skin is still exposed to UV radiation," said Khanalieva.
According to analysts at SBER EAPTEK, funds from SPF were bought 2.8 times (+177%) more often in 2024 than in 2023. According to Cooper, last year the most popular product with SPF was a face cream with a protection level of 20. In second place in terms of sales is an anti—aging cream with SPF 20. Lip balm with SPF 15 closes the top three sales leaders.
Earlier, on August 20, Anna Kutina, a dermatovenerologist and a leading specialist of the Semeynaya clinic network, told Izvestia how to take care of her skin after a vacation at sea. According to her, it is important to moisturize the skin daily, especially after a shower / bath. Products that contain aloe vera and panthenol in their composition are perfect.
