Mexico supports continued dialogue on U.S. President Donald Trump's tariffs, not retaliatory measures. This was announced on Tuesday, April 1, by Mexican leader Claudia Sheinbaum.

"We don't believe in the principle of an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth, because it always leads to bad consequences. Of course, measures are being taken because measures are being taken from the other side, but the dialogue must continue. It's not about an eye for an eye, but about what's best for Mexico and how to deal with this situation," Sheinbaum said at a press conference, a video posted on her official YouTube channel.

In addition, she called the relations with Canada good. The Mexican president clarified that she had not yet entered into a dialogue with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, as they had not been able to agree on schedules.

"I think we'll be able to talk on the phone this week. No, we haven't talked. But we have good relations with Canada, and they will continue," the head of state noted.

After that, Reuters, citing the office of the Canadian prime minister, reported that Sheinbaum and Carney talked about Canada's plan to "combat unjustified trade actions" by the United States.

Earlier that day, it became known that Trump decided to postpone the announcement of new duties to April 2.

Prior to that, Carney said that Canada would take retaliatory measures against the United States if new duties were imposed on Canadian products from April 2.

On March 4, Sheinbaum announced that Mexico would impose retaliatory trade duties against the United States. She added that the country always remains and strives to negotiate with the American authorities. According to her, the country's leadership has always offered negotiations.
