"[US President Donald] Trump has aroused more than cautious suspicions. His own distrust of allies, manifested in the belief that benefits for others are losses for America, was mutual. What this caused is familiar — a spiral of distrust," the article says.

According to the NYT, Trump's remark during a joint speech with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth at the White House on March 21 that the sixth-generation F-47 fighter jet would be sold to Washington's allies in a version weaker than the American one "for many countries confirmed a related conclusion: America can no longer be trusted."

It is noted that the countries are currently negotiating to "minimize the pain of blow after blow," including a wide range of tariffs expected in April. At the same time, according to the NYT, Washington's allies are growing concerned that intimidation may become a permanent feature of relations with the United States.

One of the key reasons for the change in the attitude of the American allies towards Washington, the newspaper calls Trump's plans to impose duties on imports from Mexico and Canada and other countries, a statement of intention to annex Greenland and Canada, and return the Panama Canal to the control of the United States.
