Panama has excluded 107 sanctioned vessels from the register

Panama has cancelled 107 registrations of vessels flying the country's flag that have been subject to international sanctions, and another 18 are in the process of being cancelled. The relevant document was published on the website of the Panama Maritime Administration (AMP) on March 28.
"This measure is being taken in accordance with Presidential Decree No. 512 dated October 18, 2024, which authorizes AMP to automatically cancel the registration of ships, as well as persons and registered owners who appear on international sanctions lists. The vessels excluded from the Panamanian registry were registered or were on the warning lists of OFAC, the European Union and the United Kingdom," the agency said in a statement.
The department clarified that such a measure would ensure that no vessel or owner associated with illegal activities would operate under the Panamanian flag. The Agency is also currently reviewing national legislation to strengthen Panama's merchant fleet.
At a press conference on February 6, Panamanian President Jose Raul Mulino called a lie the statement by the US State Department about the right of free passage through the Panama Canal for ships of the American government.
On February 5, the State Department announced that the Panamanian authorities had decided to cancel fees for the passage of ships owned by the US government through the Panama Canal. It was clarified that the government of Panama has agreed to cancel all transit fees for U.S. ships, which is expected to allow taxpayers to save millions of dollars annually.
